Founded in 1610, Hampton is home to Fort Monroe, a historic site through the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. Completely surrounded by a moat, it remains an active military site with a daytime population of over 3,000 people. The Casemate Museum is found on the base and the Hampton History Museum is in the city. St. John's Church, established when the city was founded, is a colonial building and is the oldest continuously English speaking church still in operation in the US. If you enjoy getting out with your friends at your Hampton apartments to into the great climate of the region, there are plenty of parks and recreation centers to visit. Depending on where your Hampton apartment is located, neighborhood parks include Armstrong, Aberdeen, Booker, Cary, Jane Bryan, Burbank, Machen, Tucker Capps, and Y.H. Thomas. These parks typically have playground and picnic areas, as well as tennis or basketball courts, and occasionally a softball or soccer field. Two public golf courses are here, as well as 62 tennis courts. There's also an awesome skate park, Woodland. For further exploration and water activities, visit Buckroe Beach and Park and Grandview Nature Park. Another bonus to Hampton is that there is no boat tax at the two public boat ramps in the city.
Hampton is a very progressive city in terms of education, with the first public schools established in the US here. First called the Syms-Eaton Academy, it now consists of 37 elementary, middle schools and high schools. In addition, the city is home to Thomas Nelson Community College and Hampton University, created in 1868 to further educate the freed slaves.
Serving as a spot of defense for the US on the east coast, Langley Air Force Base is located in Hampton, along with NASA and other high-tech firms. Air Power Park displays some of America's early space exploration aircraft with an outdoor display of some cool vintage rockets. In addition, the Virginia Air and Space Center attracts close to half a million visitors of all ages each year. The center features loads of interactive displays that allow you to launch a rocket, fly a plane or become an air traffic controller. You can also see more than 30 historic aircraft and unique NASA and space artifacts.
